Content Creation

Wedding content creation has become a huge trend in the last few years – with good reason! Are you wondering if you should hire a wedding content creator for your big day? Let’s talk about what wedding content creation is, the different styles of creators you can find, and what you should expect from the experience.

What is wedding content creation?

A wedding content creator is someone who captures candid, behind-the-scenes short video clips all day long, typically on an iPhone. These videos are typically vertical in orientation. They often deliver all of the unedited clips very quickly after the wedding day. Wedding content creators also usually deliver some edited compilations or montages of clips from throughout the day. If requested, content creators will also edit specific trends/ideas from Instagram Reels or TikTok.

How is wedding content creation different from wedding videography?

Both are amazing ways to capture memories from your wedding day, but wedding content creation is very different from traditional videography! Some clients want to hire a wedding content creator instead of a videographer, and others want to have both on their media team. The major differences include:

  • Videography is horizontal, content creation is vertical.
  • Videography is fully edited before delivery. Content creation clips are unedited.
  • Videography usually has a cinematic, clean, smooth look. Content creation is typically more candid, imperfect, and less refined.
  • Content creation videos are delivered very quickly after the wedding – between instant to 48 hour delivery times. Videography takes much longer to edit, so you may receive a sneak peek trailer in 1-2 weeks and final edited videos can generally take 6-12 weeks.
  • Videographers use microphones and lighting setups to enhance the audio and lighting for their videos. Content creators use minimal added equipment (occasionally a clip-on light or tiny mic, but this is rare.)
  • Videographers can capture multiple angles at once with a multi-camera setup and videography team. Content creators are usually using one phone held by one person.

Why should I hire a wedding content creator?

I love to say that wedding content creation is just like having your maid of honor or a family member there with you all day long, capturing memories on their phone that you can look at and enjoy later, BUT the content creator is doing it for you so your loved ones can be present in the moment and enjoy the entire day without being on their phones!

What if I don’t care much about social media?

That’s totally fine! I have had couples hire me for wedding content creation that do not even use Instagram or TikTok at all. Many people are most interested in having those candid memories to watch after the wedding day. But if you do want to recreate some fun Reels or TikTok trends – that’s fine too! Your content creator should be working from the priorities and goals you discuss before the wedding day starts.

So let’s talk about…

the top 5 reasons to hire a wedding content creator!

  1. You want to have authentic, candid, behind-the-scenes moments captured on your wedding day that you can watch and enjoy later
  2. You want your friends & loved ones to all be present in the moment at your wedding
  3. You don’t want to spend hours chasing down photos and videos that your guests took, figuring out how to save them or where to store them, and what edits to make with them
  4. You’d like to have videos to watch right away while you wait for your professional photos and videos to be edited
  5. You want to live in the moment and focus on enjoying your wedding day, knowing that content is covered!

What are the different styles of wedding content creation?

When hiring a wedding content creator, make sure you ask about their style and the types of videos they typically make. Some content creators are pros at teaching your wedding party specific dance moves for a TikTok trend, for example. Others focus strictly on documentary-style video capturing. Personally, I fall somewhere in between – I like to combine any trend requests from the couple with lots of authentic, candid moments!

Most content creators deliver unedited footage with no filters or color editing added. This is because clients typically like to do their own edits to match their personal style.

What should I be asking my content creator to do?

I recommend that my couples pick just 1-5 trends they would like to recreate on their wedding day (if they want any). This ensures that we can accomplish the list of requests without your entire day feeling like just a checklist of doing things for trend videos. It also leaves plenty of time for real, authentic videos of little moments from your entire wedding day.

When should my content creator start and end coverage?

My content creation package is 9 hours, because most wedding photography timelines are about 8 hours, and for content you may want a little extra time during the getting ready portion + a little extra time at the end of the night. Generally, your content creator should be there to capture details and fun candid moments while you are getting ready, and provide coverage during the ceremony, portraits, cocktail hour, reception, and a special exit if you have one (like sparklers or a getaway car).

When do I receive my wedding content creation footage?

I deliver all of my wedding content creation videos the SAME NIGHT – I upload everything into a Dropbox folder and send it over to the happy couple ASAP! Usually, couples like to look through the folder the next day while they eat breakfast. It’s a fun way to re-experience the amazing moments from the night before! Then I add any specific edit requests, as well as a few general montages, within 48 hours. Most content creators will fall somewhere in this instant to 48 hour window.

How much does a wedding content creator cost?

Pricing varies based on the level of experience and what is included in the wedding content creator’s package. My pricing is $1000 for 9 hours of coverage with instant delivery. (This includes coverage within the Southern California region.)

Will a wedding content creator work well alongside the rest of my media team?

Having a media team – photography, videography, and content creation – that can work seamlessly to capture all the moments of your wedding day is so important. Since I have 8+ years of experience in the industry as a wedding photographer, I can confidently work alongside your other media professionals. It’s important to ask your content creator how they work within the photo/video timeline, their experience working with other pros in general, and if they need the contact info for your photographer.

I always make it a point to chat with the photographers and/or videographers for every wedding and introduce myself, let them know that I’ll be working behind them and within their timeline, and offer to capture a few BTS clips for them as well! Having a media team that gets along on your wedding day is crucial for an easy timeline experience.

What should I ask before I hire a wedding content creator?

  • Ask to see sample galleries from past wedding clients
  • What does the wedding content creation package include?
  • Your venue might require a Certificate of Insurance from all vendors – ask if they can provide a COI
  • When will the footage be delivered? How is it delivered?
  • What is their style of capturing content on the wedding day?
